Summary
Recap of Larchmont Yacht Club's 126th Race Week
The 126th Larchmont Race Week concluded on Sunday, July 21 after nine days of high quality racing. The regatta kicked off on the 13th, featuring fleet racing for One Design classes and 3 v 3 team racing in z420s/ 2 v 2 in Ideal 18s. True to Long Island Sound’s reputation in the summer, the breeze failed to show up when all the sailors did. The z420s and Ideals were able to compete after a short postponement on Saturday but did not manage to continue on Sunday. Out of 24 races in the 420 league, the Hillsides team emerged victorious with the highest win percentage. In the Ideals, the Wonder Twins boasted an impressive undefeated record.
Not to be forgotten, junior events began on Monday and continued until Wednesday. Events like these are what keep the love for sailing alive and fosters growth on the water from a young age. They will often return for the adult events years after aging out of the junior program! Larchmont hosted sailors from all over the LIS for the 97th running of Junior Race Week and showcased a 3-day event for Fevas, Optis, C420s, and ILCAs. After racing on Monday, there was a “pathway to college sailing” panel held where current college sailors shared their experiences and answered questions about continuing their sailing career after high school. This was all capped off by the event of the summer: The Race Week Dance.
The One Designs were surely the highlight of race week. Comprising two weekends, the classes included Shields, J 88s, J 108s, and S class. Race committee got as many races off as possible in the light conditions and saw close scores across the board. On the last weekend z420s and Ideal 18s were able to join in on the fleet racing fun, along with racer/cruisers! A snapshot of results for all divisions are attached below and full results can be found at their respective links.
As a member of Larchmont Yacht Club, this event is truly special. Apart from sailboat racing, these nine days are also enjoyed through on-land festivities and activities. LYC hosted the pro-am tournament during the first weekend where members were able to team up with tennis pros and play in a round-robin format. Additionally, there was the (first ever!!) fishing tournament. The second weekend featured paddleboard races and pool relays. Sailors, swimmers, fishers, and everyone in between then crowded the front lawn for the Mount Gay Rum party and Sunday Awards Ceremony. In order for an event like this to remain relevant and successful, the organizers work hard every year to come up with new ideas and keep old traditions alive. This is also supported by amazing volunteers and professional staff. Stay tuned for the 127th Larchmont Race Week and join in on the fun!
