CSA Welcomes Justin Assad to the Team

We are excited to announce Justin is joining CSA, joining founder Dana Rolander and Coach Tom Sitzmann! His depth of experience and enthusiasm for the sport will be a valuable asset to our CSA families.

Justin brings a deep background in college sailing to CSA, most recently as the 15-year head coach at Dartmouth. His teams earned 27 podium finishes at NEISA and National Championships. Those included back-to-back ICSA Women’s National Championships in 2013 and 2014, and third-place finishes at the 2024 Women’s and Open Fleet Race National Championships and the 2025 Open Fleet Race National Championship.

During his tenure, Dartmouth sailors made the All-America lists 57 times. Those honorees included multiple NEISA Sailors of the Year, many ICSA Sailor of the Year finalists, and the 2013 and 2014 ICSA Women’s Sailor of the Year.

Before Dartmouth, Justin coached at the University of Vermont from 2003 to 2010. He was named 2008 NEISA Coach of the Year and led the Catamounts to their first-ever National Championship appearances in 2008 and 2010. His résumé also includes work with the U.S. Optimist National Team, Rhode Island Optimist Team, East Greenwich Yacht Club and Nantucket Yacht Club.

A 2003 Columbia University graduate, Justin captained the Lions to the 2002–03 Ivy League Championship. His path from Columbia to Vermont to Dartmouth gave him firsthand knowledge of every model of collegiate program: a student-led club team, a hybrid club with a full-time coach, and a varsity program. Along the way, he also held executive board roles in MAISA, NEISA and the ICSA, giving him a thorough understanding of how the college game is structured.

Most importantly for CSA sailors and families, Justin has spent more than two decades coaching and developing young sailors. He understands the recruiting process, the differences between programs, and what it takes to make the transition from youth sailing to collegiate competition.
