2013 US Team Racing (Hinman) Championship Report & Results

This weekend the Hinman Trophy, for the US Team Racing Championship, was contested at Newport Harbor Yacht Club in Newport Beach, CA. 12 of the top teams in the country were selected from a deep pool of resume applications. This annual 3 day event is known to be the most competitive team race in the country and, given USA’s dominance in international team racing, the World. This year was no exception with every team featuring at least 1 All-American and some with close to 20 titles between the 6 members.
Each day the beautiful Southern California sun and gentle breeze showed up with little delay. Short 8 minute races right in the small turning basin outside the club made for near perfect stadium style racing with MANY spectators cheering on the action each day. I would argue there were more on lookers at this event then any other team race I’ve ever been to! The format called for 2 round robins of all 12 teams followed by a double gold/silver round, commencing with a 1 vs. 2, 3 vs. 4, 5 vs. 6 best of 3(best of 5 for 1 vs. 2) sail-off to determine final positions. This amounted to at least 32 races per team, another Hinman record! This of course would not have been possible without the great team of volunteers from Newport Harbor along with all the umpires. Good calls or bad, they make racing better!!
The event was sailed in FJ’s instead of the usual V15 for the first time many years. California locals and college kids alike took advantage of the boat they were more comfortable in to lead the standing. After 2 ½ days of sailing and hundreds of races Minor Threat, 2011 Champions, met team Jet Lag of all current Stanford Sailors for the last podium spot. With wind up to hiking conditions, Jet Lag won two in a row to clinch 3rd.
Ladies and Gentleman, consisting of skippers Justin Law (Newport Beach, Calif.), Michael Menninger (San Francisco, Calif.) and Tyler Sinks (San Diego, Calif.), with crew Adrienne Patterson (Miami, Fla.), Marla Menninger (San Francisco, Calif.) and Lucy Wallace (Middletown, RI), took an early lead that they carried all the way to the finals. Meeting them was local team NHYC Tiller Towards Trouble with skippers Brian Bissell (Newport Beach, Calif.), Chris Barnard (Newport Beach, Calif.), Christopher Segerblom (Costa Mesa, Calif.), and crewmates Perry Emsiek (Corona del Mar, Calif.), Katia DaSilva (East Greenwich, R.I.), and Kayla McComb (Sunset Beach, Calif.). Eliminated teams crowed spectator boats for this final series. Fueled by NHYC’s famous Mai Tai’s they cheered and heckled through the finals as teams called for “room to tack” against the moored boats they occupied (true stadium sailing!!). Ladies and Gentlemen drew first blood while NHYC took the next two. This left Ladies and Gentlemen with a do or die situation that they capitalized on, winning the next two and the Championship.
