From humble beginnings, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Seahawks have risen to compete at the highest level of college sailing and the River Center now home to one of the premier sailing programs in the country. In 1980 the College established a varsity sailing team and began competing with fellow mid-atlantic teams. Throughout its history the Seahawks have won 16 National Championships, have produced over 150 All-Americans, and have hosted four Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championships.
Notably the Seahawks have also earned an international reputation through post-collegiate sailing and coaching. Six Seahawk sailors and two coaches have participated in the Olympic Games, with one of those sailors earning a silver medal. Additionally two alumnae are Rolex Yachtswomen of the Year!
As a result of a powerful common experience, the St. Mary’s Seahawks have fostered an impressive alumni network that continuously supports the sailing program, and is instrumental in its continued success. Once you are a St. Mary’s Seahawk you are a Seahawk for life, and part of a unique family. Through the common bond of St. Mary’s sailing our alumni are always eager to lend a hand to a fellow Seahawk; from job opportunities to lifelong friends, the list goes on!
