Beverly, MA -The stage is set for an epic battle in Salem Sound this weekend as Jubilee Yacht Club hosts the 2011 Atlantis WeatherGear Snipe Women’s Nationals. Joining former Olympian and Snipe class regular Carol Cronin will be Lynne Jewell Shore (Olympic medal winner, women’s 470) and Druscilla Slattery, a highly ranked sailor in the international women’s match racing circuit. Peggy Tautz and Darby Smith, recent college sailing standouts will also be in the fleet when racing begins on Saturday, July 16.
The event is being run by women. The principal Race Officer (PRO) is Susie Schneider, and the majority of the jury are also women. The organizers want this to be an event for women, put on by women.
“The fleet will be made up of almost 40% new participants in the Snipe class. This is possible because of the Traveling Snipe Fleet’s (TSF) visit to our event as well as the hospitality of the Snipe Class and the host club making boats, housing, training and support available. The TSF is traveling over 12,000 miles this summer with a 3 boat fleet that is designed to attract new sailors to the class”, said regatta organizer Shan McAdoo. “The TSF is being managed by Austin Kana, a relative new comer to Snipe sailing, but a great coach and good bosun. The boats are very fast and competitive in any race”, added McAdoo. After visiting Beverly the TSF heads west to Michigan, then Nebraska on its summer-long journey.
The organizers will also be running a clinic for young women in Snipes at the same time. The clinic allows new snipe sailors to learn the intricacies of the boat and also see why sailing is a sport that they can participate in their entire lives. The goal is to show these young sailors how fun an international boat like the Snipe can be. Today they may be sailing in Beverly, but tomorrow they could be sailing in any of the 20+ countries that have snipe fleets around the world.
This event is only possible with the generous support of our Sponsors and host club. The organizers wish to thank Atlantis WeatherGear, Maui Jim, ArtLog, Quantum Sails, North Sails, Doyle Sailmakers, Harbor Sweets, Nautical Traders, JibeTech, R&W Ropes, Fried Elliot and many individuals who gave their time and money.
