Team Sail1Design sailors have been busy abroad this summer, competing at several premier international events and delivering strong results against some of the world’s best.
Kiel Week, or Kieler Woche, has been taking place in Kiel for more than 140 years. The storied regatta draws sailors from around the globe for high-level racing across Olympic classes and beyond.
At this year’s event in late June, Annie Sitzmann and crew Anton Schmid were the top-placing American team in the 29er fleet overall. The pair also secured a bronze medal for Team S1D in the mixed division.
Annie noted that the event provided valuable preparation ahead of the upcoming World Championship, with a challenging mix of conditions testing the fleet. “Kiel Week was super light this year because of the above average temperatures,” she explained. Racing was held in marginal to light air, with shifty breeze and choppy water creating a demanding environment. “It was great practice in light air and bigger European fleets in the few races that we did,” she said, adding that the event was also a test of staying mentally prepared through long postponements both on land and on the water.

Further south, Team S1D continued its international campaign at Foiling Week on Lake Garda. Known as the world’s largest multi-class foiling regatta, Foiling Week brings together more than 20 foiling classes for a week of high-performance racing.
Representing Team S1D in the Switch class, Thomas Sitzmann finished 12th overall in a competitive fleet.
Reflecting on the event, Thomas described Foiling Week as a unique opportunity to learn and connect with sailors across the foiling world. “It was a fun, low-stress event where everyone was just happy to be there learning and sailing on Lake Garda,” he said. The conditions covered the full spectrum, from light air and flat water to windy, wavy days. The fleet also brought together a diverse group of sailors, from dedicated foiling specialists to Olympic sailors and members of the SailGP and America’s Cup teams.
