2026 Opti New England Championship Regatta Results & Report
By Airwaves Writer Grayson Tella
The 2026 Optimist New England Championship went off August 11 to 13 at Sail Newport’s Fort Adams venue, drawing a 154 boat fleet to Narragansett Bay for one of the Opti class’s premier late summer qualifiers. Hosted by Sail Newport out of Fort Adams State Park, with racing staged north of the Newport Bridge toward Potter’s Cove, the event served as an official qualifier for the 2027 Optimist Team Trials, drawing sailors and clubs from well beyond the New England region to compete for a spot on the path to Team USA selection.
Conditions were not always cooperative. Light and shifting northerlies on Wednesday forced a long postponement, pushing racing back to the afternoon and testing the patience of sailors and race committee alike before the breeze settled in enough to get boats on the course.
True to the event’s reputation for oversized fleets, organizers split the 154 entries across three starts, Blue, Pink, and Yellow, to keep racing moving over the three day window, with sailors further scored within Red, Blue, White, and Female divisions. Eight races were completed for the fleet by the time scoring closed out August 14, a testament to how efficiently Sail Newport’s race committee has learned to run a fleet of this size on the Bay.
While New England clubs were well represented, the results reflect just how national this qualifier has become. Annapolis Yacht Club and Fishing Bay Yacht Club, both Chesapeake Bay programs, landed sailors at the very top of the leaderboard, alongside strong showings from Long Island Sound programs (LISOT), CERT, and a host of New England clubs including Portland Yacht Club, Hingham Yacht Club, and CYC.

Top Three:
1st: Henry Latell (Fishing Bay Yacht Club), 26 net points
2nd: George Wyatt Tyson (Annapolis Yacht Club), 27 net points
3rd: Brooks Crawford (Annapolis Yacht Club), 28 net points
The racing at the top of the fleet was razor close. Just one point separated first from second, and one more point separated second from third, with the podium going the distance across all eight races before it was settled. Latell’s win came on the strength of three top three finishes across his counted races, edging out Tyson and Crawford in a leaderboard that stayed compressed from the gun.
Annapolis Yacht Club put together a particularly deep showing, placing multiple sailors inside the top 10, including Arthur Haneberg (6th), Archie Dove (8th), and Liam Donaldson (9th), while Fishing Bay Yacht Club backed up its overall win with Cyrus Garrett rounding out the top 10 in 7th.
Among the fleet’s female competitors, Sofia Fantarella (JK Sailing/Sachem’s Head Yacht Club) and Surina Kelchner (Portland Yacht Club) tied on net points to lead the way, both finishing inside the top 15 overall, a strong showing in a fleet that ran well over 150 boats deep.
As always, the size and scope of the Opti New Englands is a credit to Sail Newport’s race management team and the volunteers. With the 2027 Optimist Team Trials qualification now on the line for the top finishers, expect several of these names to show up again on the national stage this winter.
