The Dinghy Race, formerly known as the Secor Volvo Race, was created in 2015 as a way for local Long Island Sound sailors to participate in their own multi-leg, multi-day distance regatta. It ran continuously from 2015-2019, once in 2023, and now returns for its best year yet from August 11-12. This race, organized by the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association, brings sailors together from all around New England, and has even fielded teams from as far away as California.
The event starts at the Wadawanuck Club in Stonington, CT where sailors will depart for Mason’s Island Yacht Club in Mystic, CT. Day 2 begins after a sleepover at MIYC and a night filled with fun! Participants will then sail back to the Wadawanuck Club where they began. The Dinghy Race is meant to challenge sailors outside the bounds of a traditional regatta and expose them to a unique experience.
Sailors who participated in past years say, “The Dinghy Race was the most memorable experience of my junior sailing career. It brought the whole ECSA together and created bonds I will never lose!” and, “The Dinghy Race was the best regatta I’ve ever been to, with both fierce competition and strong friendships that last longer than just the summer…The Dinghy Race brought more than just racing, it brought the ECSA closer and made each boat better connected, while simultaneously giving each competitor a challenging race.”
