Stop 1: Marblehead Team Race
June 22-23
Marblehead served up some of its better conditions for the 4th annual V15 Team Race. Under sunny skies and nice southerly breeze, 8 teams took to the water on Saturday for a double round robin. The course, set on the edge of Marblehead Harbor, was just puffy and shifty enough to make holding any lead tricky at best. The University of Phoenix Sailing Team (no affiliation with the college) took off to an early lead. With all current college sailors they benefited from lots of practice time and good disciplined team racing tactics. Close behind were the Rhode Island Pistols, a very experienced post college team who have sailed together for a couple years. In typical Eastern Yacht Club fashion, competitors were treated to burgers and beers on the front lawn after racing. Many wishing they could have some races back, unhappy with poor decisions or bad execution. Later, most migrated to the local dive bar to cheer (or boo) the bruins in game 5. Most were disappointed with the outcome.
Sunday morning brought a good forecast and hope of an early seabreeze but as can sometimes be the case, sketchier conditions prevailed. A third round robin was completed in very unstable, light and lumpy weather. Good boathandling and a fighting attitude were key to putting wins on the board as no combination was really ever stable. A double final 4 was planned never started due to wind delays slowing down racing mid-day. U of Phoenix survived a perfect RR3 by the pistols to take victory by 1 win. Superfly Snucka was 3rd beating out the home Eastern Yacht Club team by 1 win. Despite the less then favorable conditions on Sunday all teams had a great time sailing 21 highly competitive races each. This could not have been done without professional race committee work from Eastern who deserve all the credit for running such an efficient regatta.

Stop 2: Midsumma’s Team Race
June 29-30
As usual the Midsumma Team Race was a windy affair. Wianno Yacht Club hosted 7 teams for this second event in the Grand Prix Series. After a lengthy delay Saturday morning waiting for a storm cell to pass the RC, lead by Pete Johns, got off 1.5 round robins. Racing took place in it’s traditional spot outside Wianno Harbor on the open Nantucket Sound. With a strong south wind, racing was wet and wild with large waves rolling down the course. Boatspeed was a big factor as was surfing waves downwind. After a short but intense day competitors returned to a wonderful BBQ put on by a great team of volunteers from the club. Pete Johns also lead a great debrief discussing some interesting rule situations.
A thick fog greeted the sailors Sunday morning. Instead of sailing on the sound the RC sent everyone to Cotuit Bay, which is one bay west from Wianno Yacht Club. This required sailing about 15 minutes through a narrow river and down into the bay. In contrast to the big waves form Saturday, this venue produced flat and slightly shifty conditions. Team racing was the main priority of the day making races uncertain and intense right up to the finish line. The Rhode Island Pistols held on for the win with a 15-4 record tying Big Whoop but winning the tie breaker by beating them 2-1 when they raced. Winners from last weekend, University of Phoenix Sailing Team, finished 3rd keeping there hopes of winning the Grand Prix alive.
