Hi all…attached please find some important information on Youth Match Racing Opportunities in 2014. Thank you for forwarding this information on to others you know who may be interested.
ISAF YOUTH WORLDS
ISAF is holding its first ever Youth Match Racing World Championship, July 21-27 in Finland in J/80’s. The age is Under 23 (can’t turn 23 in 2014). We want to send our best match racers to try to win this event. Attached is preliminary information on the event and the selection process. Note that the application deadline is April 15. Do not miss that deadline!
ROSE CUP & GOVERNORS CUP
The Rose Cup is the national youth match racing event that is, in effect, the US youth national racing championship. This year it will be held June 18-22 in Oyster Bay, NY, hosted by Oakcliff Sailing and the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. The event is for sailors 16-20 (must be 16 and can’t turn 21 in 2014). Racing is in Sonars with 3 or 4 people and a max weight of 578 pounds. This means if you are heavier, you can sail with 3 people, but four lighter people can sail together. We sincerely hope we see a lot of girls in the event as well as guys. As a further incentive for girls to sail, the top finishing female skipper at the Rose Cup will receive an invitation to the U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship, also being sailed at Oakcliff on July 10-14, but in their Match 40’s!
Also this year, the top three skippers at the Rose Cup will receive automatic invitations to the 2014 Governor’s Cup, which is the prestigious international youth match racing championship held July 14-19 at the Balboa YC in Newport Beach, California. In addition, you can request an invitation to the Governor’s Cup (and possibly receive an invitation well before the Rose Cup begins) simply by requesting an invitation to the Rose Cup.
Attached is the Rose Cup press release, NOR, Request for an Invitation (RFI), and a four-color informational brochure. Note that the RFI deadline is April 15 if you want to receive preference over those who apply after April 15. Do not miss that deadline!
CLINICS & REGATTAS
Attached is a paper listing many of the clinics and regattas, and resources like my Match Racing Playbook, that are great opportunities for you to either learn about match racing for the first time, or continue to develop your skills. You can learn a ton in a short 2-3 day clinic or clinegatta (clinic and regatta combined in one event with coaching throughout). I can’t encourage you strongly enough to attend as many clinics and regattas as you can possibly get to this year, and to watch the Welcome to Match Racing DVD and read the Playbook and Menin/Cutler CD, all referred to in the Youth Opportunities paper. You will become a lethal match racer very quickly…promise!
