Beverly, MA– Carol Cronin and Lynne Shore showed why dedication, conditioning and practice pay off with masterful performances and the Atlantis WeatherGear Snipe Womens Nationals, taking first and second respectively. After two days and seven races, the competitors seemed happy with the venue and their hosts, the Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly, MA.
Carol and Lynne, along with their crews Kim Couranz and Julia Marsh were able to sail consistently in a wide range of conditions, with Saturday racing in 3-6 knots and Sunday racing happening in almost 15 knots. . Lynne was sailing a Snipe for the first time in many years, but had no trouble getting up to speed. Dru Slattery and Linda Epstein rounded out the top of the fleet in third. Fleet action was tight on on both days of sailing with usually 2 -3 minutes separating the first finisher from the last finisher.
This year’s Women’s nationals was also a chance to pull in new talent, The Traveling Snipe Fleet (TSF)was well represented by Allison Rowe and Brianna Grenier, two sailors new to the Snipe and apparently hooked. The TSF departs for Michigan and the Snipe Nationals starting later this week.
In addition to a tough field of adults, the Sandy Point Sailing Association fielded three teams of students. The kids had fun and learned a lot in the variety of conditions. The 19 boat field had a wide age range of sailors with the youngest just 12 years old.
The highlight of the weekend came when the East India Merchant Ship “Friendship” attempted to join the fleet (photo attached). After some negotiations with the PRO, it was decided that “Friendship” did not conform to existing SCIRA measurement rules.
