Buzzards Bay Regatta (for full results see the end of this article)
The idea of sailing in Buzzards Bay for the first time was a little bit daunting for me, as the area is known for its extremely heavy wind. My skipper Emma and I came prepared with all of our sailing gear from our spandex shorts and tech shirts to even our dry suits, even though they were not even nearly needed.
The practice day started out as a perfect day for unloading the gigantic AYC trailer which holds up to six 420s and a coach boat. We rigged as quickly as possible, as most of us were eager to get out onto the water. The wind seemed decent and the sun was up, which made it a great day for sailing. We headed out into a solid 11 knots of wind, so we were just getting out onto the wire. Our coaches Russ O’Reilly and Nick Martin started practice with some upwind practice drills with a few simple rabbit starts and tacking on the whistle just to get us back in the habit of using the trap after the CJ Buckley Team Race Regatta, in which we used neither the trapeze nor the spinnaker. We then headed back downwind to familiarize ourselves with the spinnaker once again, doing a couple of gybes and sailing different angles and practicing a little bit of pumping on waves, as it is quite helpful during races. They then had us do a practice race (WL) around a yellow can about a half-mile out. The race started with a rabbit start, in which Emma and I got shot out the back, however we came back to get second after tacking away from the group and just sailing as fast as we could in clean air. After talking to our coaches about the start, we learned that “pulling the ripcord,” as Russ phrased it, to get into clean air needs to happen very quickly after realizing what position you’re in. We then ended our practice day with a downwind start and race in. That proved to be a little bit more challenging than one would think. It was pertinent to get onto the port gybe as fast as possible, but some boats did not recognize this as took Emma and I out to the starboard side of the line. Once they gybed, they realized how much further they had to sail because they hadn’t taken a good look at the course before starting. This just really drove home the concept of being aware of your surroundings on the race course, because noticing even a slightly skewed course could win a lot of boats during even just one beat.
For the first day of racing, the fleet of 145 was split up randomly into blue and yellow. The majority of the AYC kids were placed into the blue group, which meant we had the second start. We got to the venue and rigged at 8, right in time for the rain to come pouring down and put us into on-land postponement. Once the rain finally cleared up and we got out, which was around 10 am, we were surprised to discover the wind was not actually that strong. Our coaches told us that if the sun started to come out and warm up the land, we would experience a nice sea breeze and the wind would fill. So we waited, and waited and finally the sea breeze came. For Emma and I, the first race was a complete game of catch up. We had a terrible start with no acceleration off of the line. We stayed on starboard until we had a clear lane out on the left but when we did our first roll tack, the pin on our starboard shroud popped off. We then immediately tacked back onto port with the worst tack any coach had ever seen in competitive C420s, with me holding the shroud. We decided to just sail towards port tack layline while I tried to put the quick pin back into the chain plate without taking off any tension. But because we couldn’t take off any tension, I had to put the pin in at hole 7, instead of 5, which is what we were previously on. So for the rest of the first race, we sailed with our pins in two completely different positions, and somehow managed to gain enough boats to get back up to the first half of the fleet. We got off a total three races before we all headed back in, with the wind building steadily throughout the day. By the bottom reach of the last race for the blue fleet the breeze had built to almost 20 knots, and many boats doused their spinnakers and did a jib reach instead. However the few boats that decided to keep their spinnakers up and sailed successfully with them made unimaginable gains right before the final upwind and finish.
Heading out into the second day of BBR was a little bit more exciting than the first, especially since the weather was significantly better. Unluckily for all of the sailors who expected consistently heavy wind, we were once again disappointed. The wind never really settled and the breeze was up and down all day. But unlike the previous day, the course was much more square, which made finishing well much easier for boats with good boat speed but perhaps not the best starting mechanisms for crowded lines. After the second race of the day when Emma and I got completely shot out the back and received our worst score in the entire regatta, we decided to avoid the clumps on the line, and just think about getting a clear start where we could just use our boat speed to get into clear air. This turned out to be a really good idea, as the last two races of the day were our best for the entire regatta.
The breeze on the last day was the very opposite than what one typically thinks of for Buzzards Bay. We went out with probably five knots, which was just enough to sail out. We all get out towards the course and all winds completely dies. The Race Committee immediately puts up the postponement flag, which stayed up for over an hour. All of the kids from Annapolis, used to this type of wind condition, were quick to raft up on the coach boat, drop our mainsails, and just hang out. Emma and I actually went for a nice swim, knowing that in this type of condition it was the best way to cool off and get away from the crowded coach boat. After a good while of this, the wind picked up slightly so we all hopped back into our boats, raised our sails, and got ready to sail. The PRO set a course, got the gold fleet into sequence, and called it off as there was a major wind shift and the course was no where near to square anymore. Wind shifts like this continued throughout the entire day, at one moment it would be coming from
the direction of the New Bedford Yacht Club, the Race Committee would set a course, and the wind would have a 100 degree shift. However, they were desperate to get a race off before the 2 pm deadline. The last sequence was started at 1:59:35, according to my watch, as I found it to be an anomaly that a Race Committee came so close to the last start call. But they realized that starting that race would be unfair to the sailors, especially since the pin was so favored that a boat who got shot out at the start there would still fair better than a boat who had a good start in the middle of the line.
All in all, Buzzards Bay was nothing like I expected, but that is definitely just another part of sailing. The wind isn’t something you can control, but your attitude definitely is. “Sad sailors are slow sailors” was the testament to live by, and even though we were a little bit disappointed by the lack of wind on this infamous bay, both Emma and I consider ourselves lucky to have sailed there. Sadly for us, this was our last big regatta of the summer as we weren’t going to Youths, a fact that hit us hard as we were heading in on the last day. We both have learned so much this summer, which we attribute completely to Russ and Nick, who have both taught us so much. We are sad to see this summer come to a close but are both excited to get back to sailing for high school and hopefully return to these same regattas next summer and learn even more.
