The Southold Yacht Club has been promoting a love of sailing in our beautiful waterways for over 80 years. We are a small family-oriented club open to all who have a love of sailing. Our mission is to make sailing accessible to the North Fork community and, therefore, we keep dues and program fees at an affordable level for families and individuals. Our beautiful setting on the sandy shores of Southold Bay is the perfect location to sail and join community members in summertime activities.
Our membership includes new members as well as families who have sailed at Southold Yacht Club for generations. Both old and new join together to create a fun, safe and inclusive community. Volunteerism drives our club and is the backbone of our existence. Every summer people help out on the land and water to run regattas, weekly races, social events and annual fundraisers. Our community members help with everything from food for events, race registration, driving safety boats, and club clean up.
Our junior sailing program is the heart of our club, helping young sailors to learn to sail in a variety of boats and at varying levels. Whether first time sailors or competitive racers, our young sailors learn about sailing, rigging boats and tying knots. Most importantly, they learn about safety on and off the water. Most instructors have been students in our sailing program, every summer moving to the next fleet and skill level. It’s not surprising that often these sailors return with children of their own.
Our clubhouse is an historic one-room space with an adjoining porch, kitchen, snack bar and lavatory facilities. Our exterior property includes a fenced in storage area for small boats, a ramp for dinghys, and a shaded picnic area with a sensational view of Southold Bay. The primary use of the clubhouse is to house our Junior Sailing Program in the summer months. Swimming is accessible from our beautiful beach, and supervised swimming is convenient at the adjacent public beach and playground.
SYC is seeking a Junior Sailing Program Assistant Director And Head Sailing Instructor to manage and lead approximately 15 instructors and junior instructors involved with the JSP.
The Junior Sailing Program Assistant Director And Head Sailing Instructor position is full-time (Monday-Friday), generally on site with occasional off site coaching at regional regattas, for the duration of the JSP.

At Saildrone, we sustainably explore, map and monitor the oceans to understand, preserve, and protect our world. Saildrone designs and manufactures wind and solar powered autonomous surface vehicles called Saildrones, which make cost-effective ocean data collection possible at scale. We work with governments, civic agencies, foundations, universities, and private companies around the globe to drive better information about our oceans and seas – be it in sailing drones into the eye of a Category 4 hurricane to obtain new scientific storm data, mapping out the ocean floor, collecting new CO2 data in hard-to-reach areas, counting biomass to establish fishing quotas, or detecting and stopping illegal fishing and drug trafficking. As a result of our work, we have been selected as one of the “Forbes Top 10 Wonders of 2021”, as well as the Smithsonian Institute’s “Top 10 Ocean Stories of 2021”, New York Times’ “Top 21 Things that happened (for the first time) in 2021”, and Popular Science’s “100 Greatest Innovations of 2021”. We are based in Alameda, CA, with offices in Washington DC and St. Petersburg, FL and operate our missions worldwide. We are backed by top-tier investors in the frontier-tech and sustainability sectors, including Social Capital, Capricorn, Lux Capital, BOND Capital, and Emerson Collective.
These are exciting opportunities at a fast-growing team at the cutting-edge intersection of big data services and autonomous hardware. You will be an integral part of a high-performing multi-disciplinary delivering high impact for humanity and future generations.
