With team race nationals qualifiers now complete, the coaches put together their final national team race rankings before the big event.
Not surprisingly, a number of non-qualifying teams have remained in the Top 15, most notably Tufts University who has had a great season and just barely missed qualifying at the New England Team Race Championship this weekend held on the Charles River in Boston.
Dartmouth and Connecticut College are also ranked teams that fell short of qualifying in the extremely competitive NEISA qualifier, teams that surely could have done some damage at the national championship.
Interestingly enough, the top four teams in the rankings hail from four different conferences! The Stanford University Cardinal of the PCCSC, who have dominated much of the spring season and will be the team to beat at nationals, and remain atop the rankings. Next is Georgetown from MAISA, followed by NEISA’s Brown who were late breakers this season but have stepped up to show their talent and won the most competitive qualifier this past weekend. And finally defending National Champions SAISA’s College of Charleston rounds out the top four.

Exciting news this summer for Team Race Fans! Sail1Design is pleased to announce a Team Race Grand Prix Series. This series takes advantage of the already strong summer Vanguard 15 team race regattas and adds a little structure by giving teams something to work towards at the end of the summer. This is a first of its kind series for team racers featuring great regattas, excellent prizes, and a user-friendly format. Sail1Deign has secured sponsors to provide great prizes to winners at each event and the Series Champion.
Sponsors:
RITRA: RITRA(Rhode Island Team Race Association) will provide FREE boat charters at NYYC to the team placing highest at either one of the first two stops. To be eligible, this team must have purchased charters for the event from RITRA of at least 2 of their team’s 3 boats. This is a great incentive for out of town teams or people who don’t own V15s. You could get two regattas for the price of 1!
Sturgis: The winners of each series stop will receive Magic Marine Pullover Hoodies for each member of their team. This hoodie has an outer shell like a spray top with a warm fleece lining on the inside.
Atlantis: The winners of the Grand Prix series receive embroidered Atlantis jackets. Show off how you won the most competitive team race series in the world!
Other: Expect prizes from Sail1design and other sponsors. If your company wants to get in on the action send an email to series coordinator, Clinton Hayes [email protected].
Regattas:
Marblehead Team Race: June 22-23 http://www.easternyc.org/page/sailing/racing/team_racing
Midsummas: June 29-30 Wianno Yacht Club: Details Soon. www.Ritra.org
NYYC Team Race: August 17-18 http://www.nyyc.org/yachting-public/teamracing/2013-v15-teamrace
Format
Teams will earn points at each event based on their finish position. Scoring will be High Point to allow for teams to only sail 2 events and still potentially win the series. Only the top 12 teams will earn points at each event.
1st– 100 6th– 35 11th– 10
2nd– 80 7th– 30 12th– 5
3rd– 65 8th– 25
4th– 55 9th– 20
5th– 40 10th– 15
If there is a tie between two or more teams, each team’s best three of four scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference, the tie shall be broken in favor of the competitor(s) with the best score(s). If a tie remains, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last event, then next to last, etc.
Teams
A team is defined by their team name only. Any number or variation of individuals may sail in the series at any time. This eliminates the hassle of substitution rules and allows teams to sail with whoever they wish at each event. The point is to carry a consistent team name from event to event.

The Club 420 Association has created a point system which will be used to rank sailors after each event. The qualifying team with the most accumulated points will win the series. Skippers must sail all three events to qualify for the individual skipper award. Likewise, to qualify for the individual crew award, he/she must compete in each of the three regattas.
Additionally, a newly created Top Rookie will be awarded at each of the three regattas, recognizing the skipper and crew with the best performance. The teams which qualify for this award will not have individually competed in a Club 420 Association sponsored event previously.
New Club 420 Association Executive Director, John Vandemoer, shared his enthusiasm about the new championship series. “The Triple Crown series encompasses a diverse group of regattas highlighting some of the best venues in our Club 420 regatta calendar. It is my hope that sailors will join the tour this summer and look forward to competing at the highest levels for the first ever Triple Crown. These three events are some of the most popular on the Club 420 circuit and each event should have plenty of good competition and big starting lines.”
The series rules and point standings will be posted on the Club 420 website (www.club420.org). To be eligible, all competitors must be members in good standing of the Club 420 Association. The standings will be updated after each regatta so sailors can keep track of the scoring. All sailors competing at these three regattas will automatically be entered to compete in the Triple Crown — no separate entry is necessary.
The Regattas of the Triple Crown 2013
Club 420 Nationals – July 11-13, 2013 Lake Geneva, WI
The Nationals will be the first stop of the Triple Crown series and there is no better place for a new series than on the waters where sailing legend Buddy Melges grew up and honed his skills to become an America’s Cup and Olympic Champion. Lake Geneva will be a great test for our Club 420 sailors and will challenge every sailor’s strategy and tactics. Lake Geneva Yacht Club will be hosting the event. The regatta website is: http://lgyc.com/events/2013-club-420-assn-us-national-championship/
Club 420 North Americans – July 19-22, 2013 St. Margaret’s Bay, Halifax Canada
St. Margaret’s Bay is one of the most beautiful venues in Canada and St. Margaret’s Sailing Club has been host to many national and world championships. They are the perfect host for the second jewel in our Triple Crown, the 2013 North American’s. With great sea breeze and open water sailing that will test any Club 420’s boat speed, this regatta and venue are not to be missed. The regatta website is: http://www.smsc.ca/regattas/2013-bay-wind-regatta
Buzzards Bay Regatta – August 2-4, 2013 New Bedford Yacht Club, MA
Although this is not a Club 420 Association sponsored regatta, it is fitting that our Triple Crown series should culminate with the Buzzards Bay Regatta. This regatta has been popular with the Club 420 class from the beginning. Buzzards Bay is one of the most infamous venues on the east coast, renowned for its summer sea breeze. BBR is a popular regatta with limited space, so register early to get a spot on this 100+ boat starting line. The regatta website is: http://www.buzzardsbayregatta.com

MISSA
Mallory Midwest Qualifier 2013
April 27-28
SATURDAY APRIL 27
Sailors showed up to Columbia Yacht Club to light winds from the South. As the A-fleet headed out for the first race the wind died and we went under AP until 1:00pm. By that time, the breeze shifted to the North East ranging from 4-8 knots. We were able to complete 3 full rotations. By the end of the day, Oconomowoc was leading by 20 points with Lake Forest and Arrowhead in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
SUNDAY April 28, 2013
The first race started on time at 9:30am. The race committee was able to get in 3 full rotations and one half rotation just before the 2:30pm time limit for the day. The wind was out of the north ranging from 5-10 knots. Before the final scores could be posted, there were 3 protests filed resulting in two disqualifications, and one redress was awarded. Racing was close all weekend and by the last race, Lake Forest ended up winning with 129 points. Oconomowoc ended up in 2nd and Minnetonka in 3rd. Congratulations to the three teams qualifying for the Mallory Championship, and thanks for all the teams for a great weekend of MISSA sailing.

Racing in 4-7 kts we complete another 6B and 4A races for a total of 24 races (12 in each division). Spectating was awesome from the beach and pier at Cabrillo Beach. Many thanks to the volunteers and regatta organizers from Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. Congratulation to Point Loma, Cathedral Catholic, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Dos Pueblos High Schools who will represent the PCISA at the High School Dinghy National Championships (Mallory Trophy) in Chicago, IL on May 11-12, 2013.

Indian Harbor Yacht Club
Sunday, April 28
REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: The forecast was picture perfect on Long Island Sound yesterday as Indian Harbor Yacht Club played host to the NE Double-Handed Qualifier; The O’Day Trophy. Winds were light in the morning and gradually built to 10 knots. Both Divisions were able to be on the course at all times due to the support of 30 420s from Greenwich HS, The Brunswick School, and Rye Country Day boats. Great to see other districts pitching in to help others. Thanks MASSA! It was a hard fought close battle all day and results were changing constantly until the last finish. Thanks to Andrew Skirvan (PRO) and his crew for running a great regatta. Thank you to Indian Harbor YC for their awesome hospitality. Congrats to Cape Cod Academy for winning their first NE Fleet Champs., as well to North Kingstown and The Hotchkiss School for their advancement to the Mallory Trophy being held in Chicago.

MASSA
Saturday, April 20, 2013
18 schools from MASSA, Top 4 qualify for the Mallory National Championship. First race off at 9:30am in a 5-7 knot westerly and outgoing tide. Breeze stayed consistent until race B2 when it shut off mid-way through the race. Before the next set the breeze turned back on 13-17knots from the NW (from up-river) generating large waves. It soon settled down to a 10-15knot Northwesterly for the next couple of sets. A few breakdowns occurred including, but not limited to, torn sails, a sheared pintle, snapped centerboards downhauls, a flexible rudder, and a snapped tiller extension. Breeze kept shifting right and eventually shut off resulting in a 20-minute delay. The final A set for Saturday was sailed in a 3-5 knot NE breeze with the tide slack. The final B race was sailed in a dying 3 knot ESE breeze and incoming tide. Racing was called for the day ~5:00pm due to lack of wind. Protests and redresses were heard resulting in DSQs and BKDs.
Sunday, April 21, 2013
Sunday greeted us with a strong 15-18 knot Northerly, which made conditions quite chilly and choppy. We started with the B race we finished on Saturday to close the set. The breeze steadily decreased throughout the day but stayed more or less consistent in direction, aside from the oscillations which could be large at times. The points were quite close for the top 7 teams coming into the end of the regatta. Overall Severn School emerged victorious with great consistent sailing, followed by Annapolis, Broadneck, and Christchurch School all who qualified for the Mallory Trophy in Chicago. 20 Races total were sailed in a myriad of conditions. There were more breakdowns than acceptable, but overall the regatta was a true test of sailing skill. Thank you for all who helped and contributed. The MASSA Board served as the Protest Committee for the regatta.
