505 A-Cat Midwinter Championship

The 2010 5o5 (and A-Cat) Midwinters featured an array of conditions and situations that have left the fleet itching for more. Competitors arrived Wednesday evening and began to rig up Thursday morning for a bit of practice. Once at beautiful Fort DeSoto Park, no less than four surprises were there to greet them.

First, Hometown hero Ethan Bixby showed up with his 5o5 that had been “hanging out with the wrong crowd” — it now had a bowsprit and an asymmetric spinnaker! Needless to say, Ethan and crew Erik Boothe would be the rabbit for the entire weekend (and would not be scored with the rest of the fleet). Second, even more shocking than the bowsprit was the appearance of a true English gentleman from the Left Coast – the infamous Brit(and current runner-up at Worlds) Mike Holt. He was there to drive for the third surprise, the second Prodigal Son, Nick Nelson, who has returned from his quest to marry an Arabian princess. Finally, Holtie brought along with him from SanFran lots and lots of BREEZE.

Friday began with a blast, as a cold front was moving through St. Petersburg. The 5o5s left the beach (with the A Cats strapping themselves to the palm trees) in a southerly 18-20 and trekked across the shipping channel. Once there, the breeze built to the upper 20s as the front began to reach the Bay. “Comandante” Drew Buttner and Ramsey “Snookie” Key showed off the tricks the learned out at Worlds and took the bullet in the windy race. JB Turney & Russ Miller took second, and Augie Diaz and crew Luke Lawrence took third. With winds in the upper twenties, the fleet scurried home as the storm peaked with gusts in the fifties. The fleet dined that night at the Pass-a-Grille Women’s club, with Holtie sharing his thoughts on sailing in big breeze.

Saturday began out quite a bit calmer, as most of the front had moved through, leaving more consistent winds in the lower twenties. Buttner – Key continued their hot streak in the second race, taking the bullet. Augie – Lawrence and took second and Holtie-Nelson took third. As with Friday, the breeze continued to build, and even Holtie certified it as being windy. The second race of the day was taken by Augie & Lawrence. Macy Nelson and Parry Barclay took second and Uncle Henry Amthor and Dustin Romey took third. With the breeze continuing to build, the fleet headed home again. A Cat Ben Moon and Erik Boothe led the fleet out to the next racecourse in the heart of downtown St. Pete’s.

By Sunday morning, the front had mostly moved through, and with most of the fleet still licking their wounds, a few were looking forward to tamer conditions. Teams were still wire running for the first two races, and three quality races were run. Jesse Falsonito and Chris “Grasshopper” Behm emerged from the hospital (see below) for a great day, taking a bullet and two seconds. Augie & Lawrence took a bullet in the second race.

Congrats to Augie Diaz & Luke Lawrence on their title (Augie’s second in two years in the fleet) and to regatta organizers Ethan Bixby and Lin Robson for running the show off the water. Also, big thanks to Dave Ellis (the PRO) for running the show on the water.

Rock Hall Yacht Club to Host 2010 USA Junior Olympics Sailing Festival

Rock Hall Yacht Club to Host 2010 USA Junior Olympics Sailing Festival

Rock Hall, Maryland — The Rock Hall Yacht Club, in Rock Hall Maryland, has been selected to host the USA Junior Olympics (JO) Sailing Festival for the Chesapeake Bay July 9-11, 2010. 

Since the inception of the program in 1997, more than 35,000 emerging sailors between the ages of 8-18 have benefited from participation in over 200 events hosted by numerous clubs and organizations throughout the continental United States and Hawaii. Each event is unique in that it offers various levels of competition, skill building and fun activities, however, all share the common goals of drawing young sailors to the sport and promoting the development of skills. Over the past twelve years, hundreds of aspiring sailors have been motivated to pursue their Olympic dreams as a result of competing in US SAILING’s Junior Olympic Sailing Festival.

“Rock Hall Yacht Club will continue the tradition of the JOs in the Chesapeake Bay region”, says Lee Parks, Inshore Director of US Sailing.  “The Club’s grounds on the Chester River are stunning and provide ample space for young sailors to explore their love of the sport and water.  This coupled with a rich history of sponsoring numerous regattas over the years made the selection of RHYC an easy choice.”

The Junior Olympics at RHYC will feature an opening ceremony where yacht clubs will march in under their flags.  After a full day of sailing Optimist, Lasers, Club 420, Hobie 16 and boardsailing on Saturday, the young participating sailors and their families will unwind with Dinner and a DJ Dance Party.  Sunday’s racing will conclude with an official closing and awards ceremony with guest Gary Jobson. During the festival, RHYC will supplement team coaching with clinics targeted for the various classes of boats. 

Throughout the 3 day event, parents and spectators can watch the aspiring Olympians from the Club’s lawn, deck, pool area, and sandy beach all overlooking the race courses.  RHYC also has on-site camping facilities and will offer very reasonably-priced housing at Washington College and other area lodging.  RHYC officials expect the festival to attract hundreds of competitors from throughout the Eastern seaboard. 

“We’re honored by being selected to host this prestigious event, “says Dyer Harris, Past Commodore of the RHYC.  “Our team is already hard at work designing an Olympic themed sailing event that is sure to be a fun, exciting, and memorable experience for all.”

Airwaves One-Design Spotlight: FUSION 15

The Fusion 15 was designed by America’s Cup designer Steve Killing as a middle-ground between flat-out racing skiffs and the heavier traditional boats many sailors learned on. As such, the Fusion 15 is fast and fun, with a large sailplan and asymmetrical spinnaker complemented with a hull with good form stability and a ready willingness to plane. The Fusion 15 also flexible – although the sailplan is powerful, the jib is roller-furled and self-tacking via a ball-bearing Harken car and the chute is set by a very simple launcher, so the boat can confidently be sailed single-handed, by a good sailor and a novice, or two skilled sailors. The Fusion 15 was designed also with an eye to sailing schools, as a transition between novice boats and more demanding skiffs. Like a skiff, it has mylar sails and an asymmetric chute; in contrast though, the hull form is relatively stable and the chute is set on an extended bow, so the boat is much more durable. Killing succeeded so well in his design goals that the boat was awarded Sailing World’s Boat of the Year award in the Performance Dinghy category. Moreover, sailing schools using the boat have noticed growth in their numbers as word-of-mouth circulates about an experience that’s exciting as well as informative.
