Sail Newport’s annual Advanced Racing Clinic is dedicated to the memory of Brooke Emmens Gonzalez. “Excellence” is the word most often articulated when those that knew Brooke Gonzalez reminisce about her. Her life cut short in a tragic accident in 1997 at age 17, Brooke left a lasting impression on those that knew her. The Gonzalez Family and Sail Newport have acknowledged that; tenacity, sportsmanship, drive and determination are what set her apart from her peers.
The 3 day program will consist of lectures and on-the-water drills with an emphasis on boat-handling technique, boat speed, and strategy. This will be combined with information on what it takes to reach your goals in sailing. We maximize our time on the water and can find a variety of conditions…flat water, ocean swells, current, and breeze in all directions and speed.
On Saturday night of the clinic, sailors are treated to a speaker from the highest levels of the sport. Prior speakers have included: Gary Jobson, Dean Brenner, 470 Gold Medalist Kevin Burnham, Olympic Team members, America’s Cup veterans, and Volvo Ocean Race competitors Ken Read and Jerry Kirby. In 2019, New York Yacht Club’s American Magic was represented by Terry Hutchinson and Andrew Campbell.
The most important thing to remember is that when you get here at Sail Newport, there will be no reason to leave. Meals, spare parts, etc. will be here. Our coaches want your undivided attention. The more you put into this clinic, the more you will advance because of it, So we expect full commitment from all sailor athletes!
“These youth sailors receive the highest level coaching from some of the best dinghy sailors and coaches in the country,” says Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport. “Emphasis is on speed producing factors and techniques that work on long courses where speed is at a premium.”
The 2024 ICSA Singlehanded Championships will be held at St. Petersburg Yacht club on November 9th and 10th. Racing will be for two trophies: The Janet Lutz trophy in the ILCA 6 class, and the Glenn S. Foster Trophy in the ILCA 7 class.

The Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta brings world-class sailing talent to South Florida in a five-day event that has become the largest international youth regatta in the U.S. and South America for sailors ages 8-18. Featuring more than 700 sailors from 21 nations, past regatta participants have achieved notoriety in the sailing world, including U.S. Junior Women’s singlehanded champion Sophia Reineke, who competed in the 2013 event.
Pensacola, Florida will hold the inaugural Foiling Week from February 24th to March 2nd, a seven-day international event dedicated to foiling. We Are Foiling in partnership with Sail Pensacola aims to celebrate a new era of sailing that represents a groundbreaking advancement in marine technology. This new global approach to navigation not only enhances speed and performance, but also reduces energy consumption.
Foiling Week Pensacola boasts an electrifying lineup of activities, featuring classes such as WASZP, Moth, A-Class Catamaran, and many others. Boat races will take place in Pensacola Bay while boards will foil off the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. In terms of conditions, the wind and flat water of Pensacola Bay make it the ideal destination for foiling. Additionally, a Foiling Trade Show will be hosted at Community Maritime Park. It is the perfect place to view the latest in high-tech nautical products and apparel. Attendees and consumers will also have the opportunity to attend a dynamic symposium that explores foiling applications and enjoy live music entertainment afterwards.
Pensacola Yacht Club will handle the on-water organization, as well as the Race Committee and the competitors’ facilities. Even in the planning phases, this week proves to be a must-see event. Regsitration is OPEN for US SAILING / PORTLAND YACTH CLUB SKIFF CLINIC
This event is for novice/introductory and skilled 29er sailors. Coaching and instruction will be provided for all skill levels.
For “Learn to Skiff” Participants: Equipment is provided. Our “LTS” clinics are designed for sailors with little to no experience in the 29er to learn the ins & outs of the skiff. Training on-shore and on-water will include focused topics of movement, boat handling, apparent wind angles, & 29er rigging / tuning for all conditions.
Clinics are meant to be fun, focused, and develop skills. Sailors can expect to arrive and be guided through proper rigging techniques and settings. On-shore discussion will encompass important steps and movement of skipper and crew, successful boat handling, and the nuances of apparent wind sailing.
The 29er is probably unlike any boat you’ve ever sailed. It’s tippy and responds to small changes in body weight and sail trim.
If you have trapeze experience, great! If not, our program’s teaching model is to pair novice sailors with experienced PROs in the boat. This way new sailors to the 29er learn the ins and outs of the boat through guided instruction.
For “29er Racers”: Sailors will learn advanced 29er race techniques like downspeed/high speed boathandling, moding and rig-tuning techniques.
