The venue for the 2010 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship will be the Atakoy Marina, located on the European Coast of Istanbul at the southern end of the Bosphorus Strait. The Marina falls within the Bakirköy district of Istanbul, and is very well connected being just 8km from Atatürk International Airport. In 2010 Istanbul will also be the joint European cultural capital.
The racing area will be the Marmara Sea which should provide ideal sailing conditions for the championship. The predominant wind conditions in July are from the north east at a speed between 10 and 15 knots. Temperatures vary between 25ºC and 30ºC during the day and around 20ºC at night time. The sea water temperature in the summer is between 23ºC and 25ºC.
Event Director Gülden Aktugan said: “The city of Istanbul is looking forward to welcoming the world’s elite youth sailors. We are very busy with the preparations at the Atakoy Marina where the dinghy parks, regatta village and entertainment stage will all be located. We are also celebrating Istanbul as Europe’s joint Cultural Capital for 2010 and the Youth Worlds will be the centre piece for the summer’s sporting events and are working hard to encourage spectators to visit the venue and join in the festivities.”
The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship not only provides the top young sailors from around the world with a chance to shine on the international stage – it also gives the sailing world a sneak preview of its future stars. Competitors from past ISAF Youth World Championships have gone on to hit the heights in every aspect of the diverse world of sailing. Just a couple of today’s superstars who include a Youth World medal in their trophy cabinet are four-time America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts (NZL), triple Olympic Gold Medallist Ben Ainslie (GBR) and double Olympic Gold medallist Robert Scheidt (BRA).
Eight events will be contested at the 2010 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship (listed below). Alongside the individual events, the prestigious Volvo Trophy, currently held by France, will be awarded to the top performing nation at the championship.

The Sailing World Cup comes back to Spain with the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre
This edition will see the debut of the Women’s Match Racing on board the Elliot 6m. This new discipline joins the other Olympic classes, all of them present this year in the event: 470 men and women, RS:X men and women, Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Star, Finn and 49er. The fleet of 2.4mR Paralympics class is also back after their first participation last year as well as the Dragons, as invited class
The ISAF Sailing World Cup arrives in Europe with the 41 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía Mapfre following the SWC events in Melbourne, December and Miami, in January and opening the European sailing season.
In this edition, the RS:X move from CMSAP to Club Nàutic S’Arenal that will be the venue of six Olympic classes with an impressive 15,000sqm area on the beach next to the Club.
In the presentation act, the event’s general manager, Jaume Carbonell, highlighted the increase in the number of entries and pointed out “the “countdown to the London 2012 Olympics starts now for many nations and the Princesa Sofia Mapfre is a selection event for many national Olympic teams so we are guaranteed a great sailing competition”.
The delegate of Presidency of the Govern de les Illes Balears, Diego González, congratulated the organisation for their effort and professional work and Mapfre for their support and assured that “the Govern wishes to reinforce such an important event for the islands so that the bay of Palma can be the point of reference of Olympic sailing”. On the other hand, the manager of Mapfre Baleares, Teófilo Domínguez, affirmed “we are very proud to sponsor for fifth consecutive year one the most important sailing events in the world. Sailing is Mapfre’s flagship and I am convinced it will be a full success thanks to the enthusiasm and work of the people in the organisation”.
The 41 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía Mapfre will be held in Mallorca from 27 March to 2 April, organised by four clubs of the bay of Palma (Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and Escuela Nacional de Vela Calanova), as well as the Real Federación Española de Vela and the Federación Balear de Vela, together with the Govern de les Illes Balears, the Consell de Mallorca and Palma and Llucmajor city councils. The collaborators of the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía Mapfre are the Consejo Superior de Deportes, the Federación Española de Deportes de Personas con Discapacidad Física, the Ports Authority, Ports de les Illes Balears, the coastal department of the Ministry of Environment and companies Ultramar Express and Acciona.
Sometimes the weight helps. In last years co-ed Nationals, the heavy boat won the B division overall. Adjusting to a heavy crew works. The only problem is that there are few opportunities to compete.
Wondering if you could change the title in the side from “F 18” to “Formula 18 Catamaran”. Also it would be nice to update the picture to one of the newer Formula 18 designs. The Tiger is a nice boat but there are about 6 newer designs (Wildcat, Infusion, C2 among them). The class is growing in the US. I sail on the West Coast. At a Worlds event in Europe you can expect to see 160 to 180 boats. Because of a great box rule setup all of the boats are very capable of competing head to head. As mentioned it is a great class for a large degree of crew weight from 265 pounds on the low side to 400+ on the high side.
Coming up 20-22 April !!
Three-day clinic intended for high school and college sailors who wish to learn collegiate sailing techniques and practice like one of the top college sailing team in the country. It will be a great opportunity for sailing teams that need a little extra coaching boost to get some additional instruction. All aspects of sailing the Collegiate FJ and 420 will be covered. Specific topics will include straight-line speed, tacking, gybing, and boat handling for starting. Sailors will use the drills and copy the techniques that helped the Harvard Sailing Team win 5 straight Fowle Trophies as ICSA Team of the Year. Please note, strategies and tactics may be covered in the clinic, however the focus will be on sailing the boats well. Sailing will take place in Harvard’s fleet of FJs and 420s.
Cost: $175.00 per sailor

The first day of the 2010 Truxtun Umsted Intersectional was held in very un
Trux like conditions, bright and sunny with highs around 70. When the
competitors arrived, there was no wind to be seen, so we waited until 1000
when a light Southeasterly breeze began to fill in. the Race Committee set
a trapezoid course in the Severn River and were able to get 6 races off per
division before the breeze died out during race 7A. After that race was
abandoned, the course was repositioned further South, with the start and
finish lines right off Triton Point, to take better advantage of the late
day Southerly. The Southerly filled in at around five knots and we sailed
four more races per division until the breeze died again, this time forcing
the abandonment of race 10D. A Division sailed in FJs all day, while B was
in 420s, C was in Lasers and D was in Radials. A and B will switch fleet
for tomorrow’s racing. Taking a page from Ken Legler’s regatta management
book, we implemented the use of a pin end boat for all starts in this
regatta. Together with Appendix C of the Procedural rules, the pin end boat
allowed for a lot of clean starts and we were able to get through the day
with only two general recalls without using the I flag. After racing, the
competitors were treated to a great cookout put on by the NASS Social
Committee. Dick Morin and Herb Larrabee served on the protest committee and
heard on e breakdown request and three protests, resulting in one BKD and 3
DSQs.
Sunday morning began just the same way Saturday did with no wind and a
postponement until 1000. The high temperatures were near 70 again, although
there were a few clouds in the sky, unlike the day before. The wind filled
in out of the SSE at around 5 knots and another trapezoid course was set off
Triton Point. The wind stayed light and shifty all day, filling in from the
right and building and then dying and going left all day, much to the dismay
of LT Ben Herring and his team of Midshipmen on the Race Committee who were
trying to keep the course square. Despite a few delays waiting for the wind
to settle and to reset the course, a total of 19 races were completed per
division under trying conditions. A Huge thanks goes out to the Midshipmen
who have served on Race Committee for this event and the two weekends prior
to this one. Over the three events, our team members ran a total of 295
races and spent nearly 15 hours in starting sequence. One request for
redress was heard on Sunday resulting in BKD.
Congratulations to the Brown Bears for winning the 2010 Truxtun Umsted
Intersectional.
