In about 1 month when the first signal is set at the Quantum Snipe Nationals, there will be collegiate all Americans, Olympians, world champions and a Rolex Yachtsman of the year, in the fleet. The 36 registered boats are coming the the Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly, MA for the July 18-21, 2019 event. The organizers are projecting as many as 55 boats in the fleet at first signal.
Also sailing in the fleet will be husband and wife teams, parent and child teams as well as some recent and current college sailors. Jim Grubbs, from Long Beach, California is doing a cross country road trip with his son Barrett and making Snipe Nationals one of their stops. Don’t worry Jim we won’t tell the locals you are also planning to hit up a Cubs game on your way home. Pietro Fantoni, the current SCIRA international commodore will also be sailing.
Art Rousmaniere, Paul Earl and the organizing team at JYC have been working feverishly to remove any barrier so everyone can attend. As part of this effort, we will also be hosting the esteemed “Pickle Bowl” this year during the last 2 days of Nationals. The Pickle Bowl is for sailors who want to sail in the fleet, but cannot get the time away. You are part of the Snipe Family, we want to find a way to include you.
The Snipe class is a unique mix of sailing talent, tradition and fun. In the Quantum Nationals Fleet, there will be 3rd and maybe 4th generation Snipe sailors who have learned the sport and the boat as a family tradition. Combined with a group of amazing sailors this is a great combination of “Serious Sailing, Serious Fun”.

Whether your program is sailing competitively or recreationally fitness is an important part of sailing. You need to be strong, flexible, and able to move quickly across the boat to enhance your performance in the different wind conditions. Adding some fitness every day or every other day will help your sailors to get stronger which will enhance their performance out on the water. Does your program need a little morning or afternoon change up? By adding some morning or afternoon stretching and mini workouts, you can change up the program. By adding fitness to a junior program we can help sailors develop a good mindset about fitness for sailing. We need to make sure we make it fun and not make it feel like a chore, so they develop a positive mindset. By adding it to your junior program you can help create a fun and positive mindset so the sailors continue with their fitness journeys as they grow up.
Avoid Injury
Sailing is a physical sport and activity. So every time we hit the water we are in a position to get an injury. By adding stretching and some strength work to our programs we can help to sailors avoid injuries they may receive on the water due to lack of strength or tight muscles. However, we also need to watch when we add fitness to our programs that sailors don’t do exercises incorrectly or exercises that are too advanced. You always want to consult with a fitness professional before adding fitness routines to your program.
How to Add Fitness to your Program:
So now how can you add fitness to your program? First you want to make a program that is appropriate for the age of your group. You only need to make slight adjustments to make this work for each age group.

A fun way to finish the workout all together as a whole team with a game of “Extreme” Duck Duck Goose.
How To:
Group forms a big circle facing outwards spaced apart. Everyone is jogging in place throughout the game. Someone in the group begins with being it jogging around the circle clockwise calling each player duck until they pick one to be the goose. Each time a player is called duck they do a squat. Once a goose is picked they run the opposite way of the person it and they both attempt to race to back to that empty spot. You may need to enforce a no physical-contact to avoid anyone getting hurt. If you have time let everyone have a turn at being it.

1.1 The regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020.
1.2 US Sailing Prescriptions to RRS 63.2 and 63.4 will not apply.
1.3 This event is designated a Clean Regatta by the Sailors for the Sea Organization, http://www.sailorsforthesea.org/, a nonprofit organization that educates and empowers boaters to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waters. Single-use plastics including water bottles will not be allowed. HYC and the OA is committed to sustainability and limiting waste.
1.4 Spectator Boats may be available.
2.1 The regatta is open to One-Design classes under 25’. Portsmouth scoring will be available for a combined fleet of registrants that do not equal a fleet of 5 boats.
2.2 Entrants are encouraged to register online through Regatta Network at http://www.regattanetwork.com or at http://www.tylerpatnaude.com/ or with a valid CBYRA entry form at time of registration.
2.3 The Entry Fee is $35 and includes one (1) ticket to the Boats and Bow Ties Gala to be held at HYC on Sat night. Additional tickets are $35

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Dialing in the right combination of scores proved the secret to success for Team USA Worlds, who won the TOTE Maritime Team Racing Championships on Thursday. The Championships are one of a trio of events sailed this week out of the St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC) and were prefaced by the three-day TOTE Maritime Clinic and followed by the 27th International Optimist Regatta, presented by Electronic Merchant Systems (EMS) Virgin Islands, Friday through Sunday.
Fourteen teams of five sailors each participated in the TOTE Maritime Team Racing Championships. In exciting racing,
the champion title came down to a best of three contest between Team USA Worlds and the CRYC team. Team USA Worlds won the first race, CRYC the second, meaning the champion title came down to who won the third and final race. In the end, Team USA Worlds proved triumphant. It was an incredible effort as the five sailors, all highly skilled, had never raced together before as a team. Team members were Thommie Grit (Sarasota Yacht Club, Florida), Gil Hackel (Lauderdale Yacht Club, Florida), Jack Redmond (Lauderdale Yacht Club, Florida), Samara Walshe (Edgartown Yacht Club, Massachusetts) and Tommy Sitzmann (Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville, Virginia).
“We had never sailed against the other team and didn’t know how good they were. They were pretty good,” says Walshe.
“On that last race, we had a good start and were in the right combination,” says Redmond. “The key is to have an unstoppable combination of scores. We had that in the last race.”
Some 114 7- to 15-year-old sailors, in both championship and beginner fleets and representing 13 nations – Antigua, Argentina, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Ireland, Malta, Puerto Rico, the USA and all three U.S. Virgin Islands – started the week by training in the three-day TOTE Maritime Clinic held June 10 to 12. Top local and international coaches ran the Clinic.
“I was really able to improve in my starts. That was one of the best parts of the clinic, That, and meeting lots of new people,” says 14-year-old Julia Jacobsen, representing the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Jacobsen added that she and her family traveled nearly halfway around the world to St. Thomas as they felt the IOR would offer an excellent tune-up opportunity before the Optimist World Championships next month in Antigua.
The clinic ended with a Volvo Ocean-style race, where sailors completed four legs around the east end of St. Thomas.
“It was like sailing 4 separate races because each leg was scored individually,” tells 12-year-old Tanner Krygsveld, from St. Thomas, who won the event and who with Winn Majette and Alejo Di Blasi from St. John, and Milo Miller and JJ Klemplen from St. Croix, will represent the territory at the Optimist Worlds. “Local knowledge really helped.”
This is the 11th consecutive year that TOTE Maritime have sponsored both the Clinic and Team Race.
The 27th IOR/EMS gets underway Friday. The near-record 114 junior sailors are represented by both Championship and Beginner fleets. The Championship fleet is divided into age groups: White (age 10 and under), Blue (ages 11 and 12), and Red (ages 13 to 15). The race committee plans to run 10-plus races over the next three days, depending on weather. To kick-off the event, the sailors all took part in a Parade of Nations, led by a colorfully clad stilt-walking Mocko Jumbie.
“We are always happy to support events at the St. Thomas Yacht Club,” says Alani Henneman Todman, director of communications at the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism, who attended the Parade of Nations. “Sailing is a sport that builds character, strength and confidence and that helps our sailors to be the next ambassadors for our territory.”
U.S. Virgin Islands Senator, Athneil ‘Bobby’ Thomas, a strong advocate for sports in the territory, especially the many Olympic sports represented such as sailing, was also on hand for the Parade of Nations.
“This event is a dream for sports tourism. This is especially true because the IOR focuses on the youth. This means there are years of potential ahead for them to remember the excellent time they enjoyed here and return again to renew old friendships and build new ones,” says Senator Thomas.
The IOR, presented by EMS Virgin Islands, is hosted by the Virgin Islands Sailing Association (VISA) and sanctioned by the Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA).
An Awards Ceremony will take place on June 16.
Trophies will be awarded to the top five sailors in each fleet and top three overall. Additional trophies include the Peter Ives’ Perpetual Trophy, the Chuck Fuller Sportsmanship Award and the top female sailor. The Sea Star Perpetual Trophy will be inscribed with the names of the sailors on the winning team racing team. A new Perpetual Trophy, introduced in 2017, is inscribed with the overall winners from the past 26 years.
This year’s event will follow an eco-friendly theme. Sailors will be encouraged to recycle all plastic water bottles, use the reusable water bottle in the goodie bag throughout the regatta, keep all lunch bags and wrapping out of the water, pick up any trash on shore and accept drinks without straws.
