2019 S1D/McLaughlin Optimist Sailor of the Year Announced!!!

Sail1Design, in cooperation with McLaughlin, is pleased to announce the winner of the 2019 Optimist Sailor of the Year: Gil Hackel!This year we had some excellent nominations, making it a challenge to determine a clear winner. Remember we only choose from nominated sailors!

Here’s a bit from his nomination letter:

2019 has been a great year for Gil Hackel. With two major regatta wins and multiple appearances for Team USA, Gil‘s on fire.

A top 5 finish at USODA Gulf Coast Champs in March started his year off well. Next was a 3rd at Team Trials, arguably the most competitive Opti regatta in the circuit. Now warmed up, Gil rolled into US Nationals, where he had bullets in 7 of 10 races for the win!

In July, Gil was in Antigua representing the USA at Worlds. One of the youngest sailors from the USA to ever do so.

A third at Midwinters kept the success going. Finally to close out the year, Gil won the International Orange Bowl regatta, one of the largest youth regattas in the world.

Gil‘s a fantastic sport on and off the water, and represents the values all sailors hold dear. He’s been a proud member of Team McLaughlin racing for two years now, and loves his McLaughlin boat.

WHAT GIL WINS

Long Island Sound One Design hub seeks Racing Coaches for its Junior Program

Cedar Point Yacht Club, located in the Saugatuck section of Westport CT, boasts an enviable position in the sailing community at large. Cedar Point is known for its emphasis on small boat one design sailing, the active participation of its members, and its outstanding race management team and event execution. In any summer season, Cedar Point Yacht Club will host a major One Design North American Championship, a Junior sailing festival, a large One Design Race Week, all the while supporting thousands of races for its 8 One Design Fleets every year.

On the shore the club has eschewed the traditional pool, tennis court and dining facilities to focus on promoting participation and community. A few years ago the club approved and built an all weather Pavilion to host events. The Pavillion protects events from wind rain and sun and allows for regatta and event parties. Do not be fooled by the laid back modern approach. The club prides itself on an outstanding professional staff that manages all aspects and makes sure the details are taken care of. Not only is the race management superior, you can rest on the modern teak furniture under the pavilion with a cool beverage while watching the boats from the regatta come in during the late afternoon, or dance to the music as the twilight settles in. For its members and guests to relax and enjoy camaraderie with fellow friends and guests after racing or a day of sailing is indeed what the membership cherishes, time on the water and time with family and friends. Members, coaches and sailors alike all know about the dynamic club on the sound that emphasizes sailing, a low key attitude, strong participation and fun without the frills of traditional yacht club.

Instead the club focuses on promoting lifelong love of the sport through One-Design racing at a competitive level. Cedar Point recieved the US Sailing One-Design Yacht Club of the Year for 2018, having won the award 3 times in recognition of administrative excellence, fleet growth, creative programming, regatta support, member contribution — at regional, national and international levels.

Indeed, there is a strong history of excellent sailors – Tom Whidden learned to sail at the age of 10 at Cedar Point Yacht Club in a Blue Jay. Since then he has become one of the most prolific sailors on the planet, winning the America’s Cup 3 times, writing highly influential books on wind, water and winning and making sail-making his career of choice. Whidden is the current CEO of North Technology Group, the prolific business that has built sails for America’s Cup Winners for nearly every Cup all the while becoming the leader in the One Design sailing that Whidden began his journey in at Cedar Point Yacht Club.

On any weekend, you might find local sailors mixing it up with visiting National Champions. You might see junior sailors beginning to tack and gybe, Current Lightning(Ched Proctor) & Aero(Marc Jacobi) North American Champions, rigging in the yard, or current Foiling Waszp National Champion (Samuel Blouin) promoting the cutting edge of the sport from the beach launch area. Join the women’s sailing night, or the themed adventure sails of the junior programs.

Whatever the case, Cedar Point Yacht Club is an active avid sailing club that seeks to promote the sport for generations to come.

Cedar Point is currently seeking instructors for its well known junior sailing program. This positio n offers the opportunity to guide the newest generation of sailors at the club, to experience daily and weekly One-Design racing during our peak season and to be exposed to the sailors of the club and the area, the various sailing venues on the East Coast with short drives to all the local sailing venues (2.5 hours to Newport, RI). Our philosophy is to build great generations of sailors with a lifelong love of the sport, within the casual yet serious racing philosophy.

We are particularly looking for experienced College sailors, Jr Sailing Coaches or International Applicants to apply as advanced racing coaches for our 420, RS Feva, Laser and Opti programs. Sandy Bay Yacht Club is Hiring a Junior Sailing Director!

The SBYC Sailing Program, located in Rockport MA, is seeking applicants for Jr Sailing Program Director for summer 2019. The primary role of the Director is to oversee staff and daily operations of the junior instructional and racing programs. SBYC offers instruction for 8-18 year-olds in Optis and 420s. The Director will work with the Board to recruit and hire staff; assist the Board in marketing the program including social media marketing; oversee safety and curriculum; communicate with parents; and oversee the coordination and coaching of the racing programs. ABOUT SBYC
Founded in 1885, SBYC is located in the scenic and historic coastal town of Rockport, MassachusettsAs an active sailing club, SBYC has numerous one-design and cruising sailboats racing in regular Wednesday evening and weekend races, as well as annual Club regattas and frequent club sponsored District and National Regattas. An active social program complements these events.

Our sailing program provides basic through advanced training for both juniors and adults. Its purpose is to give our students a broad exposure to the sport of sailing, develop safe, independent sailors, offer exposure to racing, and to instill a love of the sport of sailing.

Open from mid-April through mid-October, Sandy Bay Yacht Club is located north of Boston on Cape Ann, at the end of T Wharf in Rockport Harbor where our current Clubhouse was built in 1930. A newspaper clipping from the May 22, 1885 “Advertiser” states:

“The Sandy Bay Yacht Club held its initial meeting for permanent organization last Monday evening. There was a good attendance, and the following gentlemen were chosen officers: Leander M. Haskins, Commodore; Howard H. Haul, Fleet Captain; Lemuel Clark, Measurer; Chas. Mills, Secretary and Treasurer. Regatta Committee – Chas. Cunningham, G.T. Margeson, Grafton Butman, Wm. Hale, H.H. Paul. A meeting will be held next Monday evening at the Club Room, Haskins’ Block.”
Since that time we have been actively involved in sailboat racing and training, for both juniors and adults.

Over the years both our one-design fleets and cruising boats have changed and kept up with the times. Our current one-design fleets are: Bullseyes, Club 420s, Flying Scots, Lasers, Optimists, Rhodes 19s and Stars. Racing under PHRF rules, our cruising fleet includes numerous designs from 23 to 44 feet. Along with our regular series racing, SBYC has hosted numerous one-design Championships, including District as well as National Events.

Begun in the 1930s, our Sailing Program has grown rapidly over the last several years. We now accommodate approximately 175 different kids sailing in Optimists, Club 420s and Lasers and 35 adults learning to sail in Rhodes 19s and Bullseyes. Many of our students have become accomplished sailors and racers.

Not all of our activity is sailing around the buoys, pleasure sailing or even chasing down that prized striped bass. There are numerous social activities to enjoy while ashore, ranging from potluck or catered dinners to our well attended Sunday morning coffees. Juniors also have numerous social events to choose from, including cookouts and movie nights.

LISTENING & COLLABORATION

Our commissioning process begins with a meeting with our client to best understand and prioritize their wants and needs of their new vessel. TNY bring with them a wealth of knowledge that they use to coach and encourage the achievability of their goals. Moving forward we regularly update our clients throughout the course of the commissioning process and keeps them involved in the progress through digital media, photos, and video.

SOURCING & PURCHASING

From our extensive vendor list we choose the products that best fit our client’s needs, budget, and future intended usage of the boat. We set up an installation schedule based on product lead time and length of time to install said equipment

BUILD-OUT

When we receive your vessel, we take great care in protecting it for the work that will take place on it. We carefully look over and photo document all components for flaws or damage. The mindset of our tradesmen are in ease of use and aesthetics, we take pride in providing high quality installations. When the boat is finished, we will test all systems and sea trial the vessel prior to the customer setting foot aboard the vessel to ensure safety and that all systems are in working order.

HANDOVER

We will typically spend 1-2 full days running the new owner through the systems and operation of the new vessel. This includes a sail with our professional crew. As an added bonus we will compile all component literature and build a reference box for documentation.

AND BEYOND….

TNY is there for you for years later. We are there to repair and help file warranty claims throughout the boats warranty period. We can be your go to guys for all service, repair, and additional equipment installations.

This summer, the ILCA will provide two boats to promising young sailors like you! Now in its 14th year, the program covers regatta entry fees, some travel expenses and a knowledgeable mentor to get you started. You will enjoy the best equipment and will meet some really fun people! The program eliminates the financial barriers in organizing a race team and provides sailors over 19 the opportunity to focus on learning a new boat in a competitive Class that has been the starting point for many of the very best racers in the World! International 2.4 Meter Class CanAm Series 1 Results & Wrap up

Port Charlotte, FL – December 11, 2019

The first of five sailing events concluded today at the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club. Twenty two boats from Canada and the United States sailed 4 races on day one, but were left ashore with no wind on day 2.

American Paralympic sailor Dee Smith held onto a one point lead over Canadian Olympic sailor Allen Leibel. Smith was quoted as saying “I was lucky enough to win because my mistakes were smaller than my competitors”. American Jeffrey Linton rounded out the top three. As mentioned above, the International 2.4 meter class winters in FL and runs 5 different events from December to March. Can Am 2 starts Friday December 13. After the new year, CanAm 3-5 run each month through March. The class welcomes newcomers with great hospitality and high quality charter boats. Sail1Design is proud to salute this boat, the people involved in the class, but most importantly, the kids who get out there and sail in this great little boat.
