2019 S1D/Lon Gundie High School Sailing Team of the Year Announced!

Congratulations (again) to Point Loma High School for winning the S1D/Lon Gundie High School Sailing Team of the Year Award! From start to finish, PLHS was a

dominant force in PCISA sailing, and then at the National Championship Cressy, Mallory, and Baker events. Here are just a few highlights from this team’s season:

1 of 20 at the 2019 Gold Pacific Coast Championship, 60 points ahead of 2nd place.

Other teams were close, but overall could not equal this incredible all-around performance. PLHS Sailing will receive custom Lon Gundie technical base-layer gear, and again congratulations for the 3-peat!!!

HIGH SCHOOL SAILING TEAM OF THE YEAR
Sail1Design supports high school sailing, because it is where future great one-design sailors, in may cases, are made. We are proud to present this award annually to the top high school sailing team in the country. Our panel looks at the entire season of district and national events, and of course, the Mallory and Baker National Championship results. To win this award, at a minimum, the team must qualify for both of these events. We also look for participation in the Single-handed Cressy National championship in the fall, along with results in the teams district-level events. This award is presented annually, in June, after the preceding year’s full high school sailing season. Winning team gets customized Lon Gundie technical base-layer sailing gear!!!!

2019 Marlow Ropes College Sailor of the Year, Fowle Trophy, Hobbs Sportsmanship and All-America Team Announced

NEWPORT, R.I. (May 31, 2019) – At an awards ceremony following racing for the Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship at Sail Newport Sailing Center at Ft. Adams, the honors for the Marlow Ropes College Sailor of the Year, Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award sponsored by US Sailing and the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy for the Best Overall Team were presented. The names of the winners will be added to the ICSA Hall of Fame display located in the Robert Crown Center at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

The Everett B. Morris Trophy is awarded annually to the Marlow Ropes College Sailor of the Year for outstanding performance at the highest level of sailing in the collegiate year. The trophy is named in memory of a distinguished journalist who spent more than 30 years, as a yachting writer and editor.

This year there were three finalists for the prestigious award: Nicholas Baird (St. Petersburg, Fla.) Yale University ’19, Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.) College of Charleston ’19 and Christopher Williford (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) Dartmouth College ’19.

Although each of the sailors had an incredible year of competition, the winner, calculated by the numbers, is Nicholas Baird.

Baird had an fantastic year of racing including finishing 4^th at the LaserPerformance Men’s Singlehanded National Championship, 1^st in the LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship, placed second overall and in A-division at this Gill Coed Championship and won many other intersectional and team race regattas throughout the regular season.

“Nic sailed well all year,” says Bill Healy, associate head coach for Yale. “It was great to see him get this award. He’s the kind of guy who is on top of everything and leaves no stone unturned. He’s a great student academically, but also of the sport.”

In Baird’s award ceremony comments he exclaimed how much fun college sailing is and all of the good friends he has made on the water.

“Putting me in this group of finalists with Augie and Chris – they are both awesome and it felt like a toss of a coin to see who among us would win the award, ”says Baird, “they both sailed really well this year too.”

“My Dad got me into sailing and my whole life has been sailing,” says Baird, who was born in Newport, R.I. while his Dad was training for the America’s Cup in Newport, but grew up sailing in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Baird graduated from Yale this spring with a double major in political science and history and plans to sail IC37s this summer.

The Fowle Trophy honors the late Graduate Secretary of the New England District and Executive Vice President of the ICYRA/NA. Len served in both posts from their creation until his death in 1973 and his devotion to college sailing is without peer. College sailing today had its very beginnings in the organizational ability and personal drive of this one man.

This trophy is awarded to the team of the College or University with the greatest number of Fowle Trophy Points.

The points are determined using the composite results of the Women’s Singlehanded, Men’s Singlehanded, Intermediate Match Race, Women’s Dinghy Semifinals/Finals, Team Race, and Coed Dinghy Semifinals/Final Championship Regattas. Each team shall receive points toward the Fowle Trophy Award based on its finishing place in each of the events in the composite. Except that only the best finishing place in the Women’s Singlehanded and Men’s Singlehanded Championships shall be used to determine the points for each school in those events.

The winner of the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy for best overall collegiate team is Yale University, who had an impressive record especially in the spring season. View further calculations for the Fowle Trophy here on the College Sailing website.

The Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award is awarded annually to the Sportsman of the Year. The trophy honors Robert Hobbs (MIT ’64), past Executive Vice President of ICSA, past President of U.S. Sailing (1992-1994), and former chair of the U.S. Sailing Olympic Committee.

This year’s finalists were Carter Cameron (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) College of Charleston ‘19, Liam McCarthy (St. Petersburg, Fla.), St. Mary’s College of Maryland ‘19 and Chris Williford (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) Dartmouth College ‘19. This year’s winner is Liam McCarthy.\

“My coaches, Adam Werblow and Bill Ward, tried to teach me early on that sailing is even better when you’re having fun,” says McCarthy, “and I finally caught on.”

One of McCarthy’s fellow competitors describes him as a true sportsman and a force of positivity on his team.

The Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) also announced the 2018-19 All-American Crews, Coed Skippers and Honorable Mentions (the Women’s All-Americans were announced at the Sperry College Sailing Women’s Nationals awards ceremony). The names of the winners will be added to the ICSA Hall of Fame displayed at the Robert Crown Center at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

A committee of representatives from the seven conferences in the ICSA selects the ICSA All-America Team. This year’s committee is: MAISA: Ian Burman (chair), Brian Clancy, MCSA: Geoff Pedrick, NEISA: David Thompson, Stan Schreyer, NWICSA: Scott Wilson, PCCSC: Blaine Pedlow, SAISA: Ward Cromwell, SEISA: Charles Higgins.

To select an All-American skipper, the committee evaluates a competitor based on their competitive record in inter-conference competition as well as conference and national championships. The committee analyzes how this record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the competition the record was achieved in, and results achieved competing with different crews, the span of the record over the fall and spring seasons, and how the record compares to previous All-American winners in past years.

For All-American crew selections, the committee uses criteria similar to skipper selection, but also considers: demonstrated leadership (may consider seniority), outstanding body mechanics and boat handling skills as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she sails.

The committee selects up to 18 Coed All-American skippers and additional Honorable Mentions, together totaling no more than 25 and up to 20 All-American Crews and additional Honorable Mentions together totaling not more than 30 honorees. The committee is not obligated to select the maximum number of honorees.

All good coaches, regardless of their chosen sport, share some important fundamental qualities that transcend technical knowledge, or specific x’s & o’s. In other words, whether it’s a basketball, tennis, hockey, football, chess, or sailing coach, there are certain key characteristics to good coaching, and none of these really requires technical knowledge of the sport they are in.
Here are some of those characteristics: logistics, organization, energy, leadership, passion, creativity, patience, dedication, motivational skill, humility.
I would bet that you could take a good coach, put him or her in a new sport, and that coach would find some success. Think about the best coach you ever had, and visualize that person in another sport, and you might see just how that person could adapt and still be a difference-maker.
However, we all know that great coaches not only possess these core qualities, but indeed they are also masters of the subtleties, rules, and technical chess moves of the sport they are involved in. Very often, great coaches are former players themselves, and often they are good, but not necessarily great players. In any event, it seems virtually certain that actually having been in the arena at some level, having been a true game player, is a necessary ingredient for a great coach.
So then, what an important advantage sailing coaches have, since the sport allows lifelong top-level competitive opportunities. While it would be impossible for a middle-aged football coach to live, first-hand, what his players go through on the gridiron, middle-aged sailors and coaches can stay current, and can compete right alongside the world’s best sailors, and even win world championships in sailing. Opportunities exist in team racing, match racing, and all types of one-design classes offer regattas, year-round. In this manner, sailing coaches have the ability to get inside the sport, at the highest levels, learn more, and feel the same things that their players go through out on the race course. The empathy gained here is a very powerful tool that great coaches employ when coaching.
Getting into the rhythm of a sailboat race, realizing first-hand the excitement and frustrations of the sport, preparing mentally for each race, “knowing when to tack”, these are all things that coaches must be able to talk to their players about, and talking to them about these things is so much more clear and present when done by someone who is actually good at them, and has done them recently at a high level.
For example, it was always easy for me to say to a team, “make sure when you are in FJ’s at the starting line to allow yourself more leeward room to accelerate since the foils are small and the boats need to go bow down first before they start lifting.” It was really easy to say. It was quite another thing to actually do it, and to go out on the starting line, in FJ’s, and practice what I preached. That was a LOT harder, and I drew a great deal of empathy with my players from that situation and recognized better ways to talk about it and to talk them through it, having been there myself. This is especially true in team racing, where coaches can see plays easily on the coach boat or on the drawing board, but it’s one thing to talk about a mark trap at Mark 1; it’s another thing altogether to go out and be able to execute it. Without being, or having been, in the arena, sailing advice and technical coaching can be somewhat hollow compared to other sailing coaches who know it first-hand and live what they coach.
So, when you look to your coaches for advice or to get to that next level, or if you are a interested in sailing in a college program, take a moment and check out the coaches resumes, just as they will most assuredly be checking yours. The list that makes coaches good coaches should be there for sure, but see if the coaches list how, or if, they stay current in their profession and have the passion to go out on the racecourse themselves. Great coaches usually always have a story, and very recent one, of a lesson learned at a regatta they sailed in themselves. They love to sail and get better, if only to become a better sailor and coach.
While there is a short list of coaches who choose to (and can) do it all, many top collegiate programs now share these coaching qualities by hiring an assistant or co-head coach, who is very often a recent college sailing alumnus and is active in dinghy racing and brings that empathy, right away, to the team. The head coach then ties everything together with experience, maturity, management, and knowledge of the game.
If you’ve ever noticed, baseball coaches actually suit up for games even though they certainly won’t be playing. This historically comes from the old “player-coach” model, and perhaps, this connects them with the game and the player more intimately. Sailing offers the unique ability for all ages to compete at the highest levels of the sport, and great sailing coaches take advantage of this, “suiting up” themselves and making themselves better at coaching by sailing competitively.

College of Charleston is the Gill Coed National Champion

NEWPORT, R.I. (May 31, 2019) – Today was the last day of the Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship, the final of three high caliber spring college sailing national championships that were run out of host site Sail Newport Sailing Center at Fort Adams by host school Brown University with support from Dartmouth College and NEISA. It was very close racing in the harbor today in Newport, R.I. and it was not until the last beat of the last race that the College of Charleston came out on top winning the national title and the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy.

A wind delay this morning kept sailors onshore until enough filled in to have a 12:10 p.m. harbor start. Winds filled in from the southeast and stayed light to moderate in the afternoon. The last races of the day brought some stronger pressure and hiking conditions. There were big oscillating shifts across the racecourse challenging the sailors to stay in phase and sail fast.

Racing concluded just before 5:30 p.m. meeting the deadline to not start a race after 5 p.m. The competitors completed six races in each division today for a regatta total of 16 races in both divisions in FJs and Z420s on windward-leeward courses.

The racing could not have happened or been such a success without the race officers: regatta chairs John Mollicone (Brown) Justin Assad (Dartmouth); college sailing representative, Danielle Richards; principle race officer, John Mollicone; chief judge, Fred Hagedorn; judges, Cliff Black, Don Becker and Megan Roach.

Charleston won this regatta two years ago and they have claimed back the title today. The Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy was donated by a group of nationally known yachtsmen as a memorial to Henry A. Morss, a Boston yachtsman and 1907 Bermuda Race winner, as well as an MIT alumnus and benefactor.

“Augie [Dale] and Katie [Lounsbury] sailed well all of the event in A-division,” says Ward Cromwell, head coach for Charleston, “which is not an easy task, but they were one of the fastest boats out there – and that was one edge we had. We also made a switch in our B-division sailors for the last set when the wind picked up a bit and we needed another edge.”

“There were challenging starts in the last races,” says Cromwell, “but we held it together. We were able to get off the line well and we had great boat speed and that’s what kept us out in front. After a tough team race regatta it was great to see the team rally and win this event.”

Sailing for Charleston is: Augie Dale ’19 with Katherine Lounsbury ’20 in A-division, Alie Toppa ’20 with Annabel Carrington ’19 and Jack Brown ’21 with Payton Alexander ’19 in B-division.

Yale University finished in second place just five points behind Charleston and won the Oxford University Trophy.

The Oxford University Trophy is awarded to the second place team in the Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship. The Oxford University Yacht Club team and its captain Jeremy Thomas presented this trophy in 1954 on the occasion of the first of a continuing series of college regattas between British and North American teams held alternately in the United States and Great Britain every two years.

“Today was about getting re-focused and getting our confidence up,” says Bill Healy, associate head coach for Yale. Yale finished yesterday in sixth place, so they made a big move up the scoreboard today.

“We had a great group of teammates who helped each other get up and rebound to get back in the racing today,” says Healy. “There were not many mistakes on the racecourse to allow any breathing room, it was tight racing for the whole event.”

Sailing for Yale is: Nicholas Baird ’19 with Sonia Lingos-Utley ’21 in A-division and Shawn Harvey ’21 with Graceann Nicolosi ’20 and Louisa Nordstrom ’20 with Claudia Loiacono ’21 in B-division.

U.S. Naval Academy finished in third place only five points behind Yale, winning the Metropolitan Sailing League Trophy, which was first presented in 1971.

“It was a tight fight this event,” says Ian Burman, head coach for Navy, “and there were a lot of teams in it, it was so close. Our B-division sailed spectacularly, it was impressive to see our skipper, Joseph Hermus, come so far. He had not been in an FJ or sailed short course races before college sailing. He worked hard and learned a lot.”

“I think the hardest part of this regatta was that the fleet was so good,” says Burman, “there are a lot of good sailors on the water and at this event the level of sailing is so high.”

Sailing for Navy is: Parker Loftus ’20 with Olivia de Olazarra ’22 and Emma Remis ’20 in A-division and Joseph Hermus ’22 with Ana Mier ’19 and Sean Linden ’21 in B-division.

The Robert Allan, Sr. and Robert Allan, Jr. Trophies are awarded to the low point “A” and “B” teams, respectively, in the Gill Coed College Sailing National Championship. Augie Dale ’19 with Katherine Lounsbury ’20 won A-division from College of Charleston with 79 points, three points ahead of second place. Joseph Hermus ’22 with Ana Mier ’19 and Sean Linden ’21 from the U.S. Naval Academy won B-division with 65 points, 33 points ahead of second place.

Don’t Forget to Stretch and Recover For Sailing

Do you think sailing is a sport? Of course, it is! So just like any other sport, we need to make sure we are stretching and recovering for success out on the water! Without proper stretching and recovery prior to and after sailing, we can end of hurting ourselves and decreasing our performance. Stretching before and after a regatta may seem like a silly thing to do, but it’s so important to do for success out on the water. Maybe you remember to stretch, but forget to recover properly, this can also lead to decreased performance out on the water. Just as important as it is to build strength for sailing we also need to make sure we are taking care of our bodies and remembering to stretch and recover for our sailing adventures.

Self Myofascial Release or Foam Rolling: This form of stretching is done by rolling a piece of foam on different trigger points on your body. You are massaging away restrictions to your muscles to improve your soft-tissue extensibility.
Static Stretching: This is done while your body is at rest. You use different movements to lengthen your muscle to an elongated position and hold it for at least 30 seconds.
Active-Isolated Stretching: During this stretch, you are moving your joint through a full range of motion. Hold each stretch for 2 seconds then repeat for 5-10 repetitions.
Neuromuscular Stretching or Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation: This stretching involves a Sports Performance Professional moving your limb until the first resistance barrier.
Dynamic Stretching: This form of stretching is using your force production and body momentum to go through a full range of motion.

After reviewing the different types of stretching. Do you remember what stretching you do before and after sailing? Before sailing you want to focus on dynamic stretching for several reasons, it activates the muscles you are going to be using, it helps improve your range of motion, and it has shown to enhance your performance during activity. After sailing you want to focus on static stretching, active-isolated stretching, and foam rolling. All three of these can be used or combined to help reduce muscle fatigue, increase your flexibility, and help improve your circulation.

Check out our new before sailing stretching routine:

High Kick – 10 each side
Lunge w/ Twist – 10 each side
Arm Crosses – 20
Switch Lunges – 10
Repeat 2x

Single Leg Deadlift – 10 each side
T-Push Up – 10
Side Lunges – 10 each side
Standing Side Reach – 10 each side
Repeat 2x

Knee Ups – 10 each side
Arm Circles – 10 each way
Side Leg Swing – 10 each side
Knee Up Reverse Lunge – 10 each side
Repeat 2x

Recovery:

Lets review some simple tips to faster recovery:

Hydrate
Fuel Your Body
Foam Roll and Stretch
Get More Sleep
Don’t Overtrain

As athletes, we tend to think all about how we can get stronger for our sport. We want to enhance that performance every time we are out there, however, I think we tend to forget about some simple ways to get there. We need to remember how important stretching and recovery are to help to enhance our sailing performance on the water. I know for me this can be a struggle, I want to get that workout in, but sometimes don’t spend the amount of time I should on the stretching and recovery. But we need to change that! Remember you need to stretch and you need to recover so you can perform out on the water!

2019 ISSA Baker TR Championship Results & Report

PORTLAND, ME (May 28, 2019) — SailMaine hosted the 2019 Baker Team Race Championship, right in downtown Portland, a beautiful location, and I believe the first time a HS National Championship has been held in Maine! 12 of the nations top teams battled it out on a nice southerly-Saturday, with winds ranging from 5-13 knots. After a long day, the first qualifying round was complete, save for a few re-sails. Antilles School won the day, with an impressive 10-1 record.
First thing Sunday, the re-sails/tiebreakers were sailed, and the final 4 teams were: Antilles, Point Loma, Christchurch, and Ransom Everglades. From that moment on, Christchurch caught fire, and never looked back, earning the 2019 TR National Champion title. In second was the venerable Point Loma, followed by Ransom Everglades, a young and up-and-coming team to round out the podium.

The regatta was a great success overall, and the teams seemed to like the “Turbo” 420’s with brand new sails from Quantum Sails.
